Identify the interfaces and edge requirements
Mark the mating diameters, fits, datums and critical dimensions. Add burr, edge and surface requirements where they affect assembly or function. The appearance of a model does not define those acceptance conditions.
This is an illustrative design exercise.
List each operation in the requested scope
If the part needs turning, features on several faces and gear machining, identify each requirement. Ask the quotation to state the proposed route and exclusions. Gear features need their governing drawing or specification; they should not be assumed to be ordinary turning.
What to include in the RFQ
- Part number, revision and quantity
- Mating interfaces, fits and relevant datums
- Gear requirements where present, with the governing drawing or specification
- Burr, edge and surface requirements
- Inspection requirements and the reports you need
Operations included in the quote
Ask the quotation to address every required operation and any exclusions. Compare the offer with the finished-part definition, including secondary operations, finishing and inspection. Resolve an omitted or unclear feature before the purchase order becomes the production instruction.
